BPhil in Philosophy

I’m a first year BPhil student in philosophy. Before I came to Oxford, I was an undergraduate at the National University of Singapore and the Australian National University. My current focus is in formal epistemology—the area of philosophy that uses formal tools to analyse concepts like ‘degree of belief’, ‘learning’, ‘evidence’, ‘rationality’, and other epistemic notions. Some questions that I’m interested in include: What is the best model to represent degrees of belief? What norms of rationality should a system of beliefs observe? How should existing beliefs change when new information is acquired? How are rational beliefs related to rational decision-making? Besides formal epistemology, I’m also interested in decision theory and political philosophy (especially rational choice theory).

The BPhil allows me to deepen my knowledge in these areas as well as broaden my philosophical education. My hope is that this prepares me for further graduate studies and a career in academia. Being an Ertegun scholar means having the opportunity to pursue my interests in an intellectually stimulating environment and to be part of a community of scholars—and for that, I’m incredibly grateful."
